Mr. Raymond "Pete" Raney
April 18, 1915 - January 24, 2007

Raymond “Pete” Raney passed away on January 24, 2007 in Tulsa, Oklahoma of age-related causes.  He was 91.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Modelle, by his parents, Orlan and Hattie Raney, and by his brother, Virgil.  He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Drs. James and Bobi Raney of Tulsa; daughters Sharon Janelle and Patsy Raney of Eugene, Oregon; sister Eula Swindell of Sallisaw; grandson Steven Presley of Las Vegas; granddaughter Sherri Brooks of Milton, Vermont; six greatgrandchildren and one greatgreatgrandchild.

Pete was born on April 18, 1915 in Sallisaw.  He joined the Army in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1934 at the age of 19.  He married the love of his life, Modelle Collins, in Charleston, Arkansas in 1940.  Pete served in World War II, seeing intense action in the South Pacific and earning numerous medals and decorations, including two Bronze Stars, one for valor in action.  He also served in Korea, and later in Germany and France.  During his military career, he served in the Infantry, Artillery, Engineers, Cavalry and Quartermaster.  Pete retired from the Armed Forces in 1963 as Command Sergeant Major of the 6th U.S. Army after serving for 29 years.  He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 32 of Tulsa, the Sallisaw Masonic Lodge No. 120, and the VFW of Sallisaw, Post 4518.  Although Pete served his country valiantly during times of war, he was at heart a man of peace.  He said that if he could live his life over again, he would like to live a life with no wars.
After his retirement from the military, Pete worked for 14 years for Seismograph Service Corporation in Tulsa before a second retirement in 1977.  Pete was a lifelong avid fisherman, and also enjoyed bowling and shooting pool at the VFW Hall.  But most of all, Pete enjoyed spending time at his home and with his family.  He was a deeply devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother and friend.  He was a generous and kind man.  He was loved by all he knew and he will be sorely missed.
