Verlan Wayne Cowan, 65, of Roland, Okla. passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017 in Fort Smith, Ark. Wayne was born February 16, 1952 in Bakersfield, Cali. to Benjamin Verlan Cowan and Anna Jo (Cantrell) Dustman. He graduated from Gans High School and received an associate degree from Oklahoma State Tech. He married Carol Yvonne Southerland on August 10, 1971 in Gans, Okla. Wayne retired from Farmers Insurance in 2014 after 39 years as an auto claims adjuster and trainer.

 

Wayne is survived by his wife, Carol of the home; one son, Kevin Cowan and wife, Kendra of Roland; one daughter, Amber Row and husband, Andy of Tulsa; two brothers, Larry Cowan and wife, Judy of Roland and Thomas Cowan of Norman; two sisters, Sheryl Russell of Norman and Sally Curtis and husband, Buddy of Arvin, Cali.; two grandchildren, Kaylee and Kasen Cowan; numerous nieces and nephews; close friends Allen Rau, Dwain Springwater and Tim Armstrong; and countless other relatives and friends. His parents preceded him in death.

 

Wayne was a son, brother, classmate, friend, husband, father, uncle, provider, role model, businessman, and a Papa (his favorite role). He was humble, kind, always willing to help others, soft-hearted for animals, and enjoyed tinkering and building things.

 

A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held on Thursday, March 30 at 1 p.m. at Agent Mallory Martin Chapel in Muldrow. Burial will be at Memory Garden Cemetery in Muldrow immediately following, under the direction of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Home. Viewing is available Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

 

Pallbearers are nephews Danny Southerland, Jeremy Southerland, Nick Southerland, Justin Southerland, Houston Southerland, Shawn Cowan, Brandon Nofire and Brian Howell.

 

Honorary Pallbearers are Dale Phelps, Larry Ulmer, Ryan Ensley, Toby Curtis and Feliz Loya.
