Mr. Robert Lee "R.L" Smith, Jr was born July 26, 1927 in Sequoyah County, Ok., the son of Robert Lee Smith, Sr and Minnie Ann (Craig) Smith. He married Wanda Bernice (Thompson) Smith on May 17, 1947 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He was retired from Southwestern Bell after 32 years of service. He was a member and past fire chief of Sallisaw Fire Department, where he spent 19 years as a volunteer firefighter and 10 years as a fulltime firefighter. He was the first fulltime firefighter and safety officer for the City of Sallisaw. Mr. Smith was certified with the National Association of Underwater Recovery Units, a Communications of America Labor member, a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, a member of First Christian Church and an avid bird and deer hunter. He passed this life on August 1, 2008 in Sallisaw, Oklahoma after having attained the age of 81 years and 6 days.
