Obituary

Wayne A. Hawkins was born May 1, 1920 in Brent comm., OK, the son of Thomas Melvin Hawkins and Alta Josephine Amos Hawkins.  Mr. Hawkins was a graduate of Sallisaw High School.  After graduation, he attended Tulane University on a football scholarship. As the war progressed, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific where he rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.  Later, he attached himself to a Marine Unit and fought at the Battle Bouganinville in the Solomon Islands and served in a medical supply unit at Guadalcanal.  After the war, he went back to college on the GI Bill.  He attended Connors State and played football and later attended Oklahoma A&M and the University of Central Oklahoma.  He returned home after college and worked at the Hawkins General Store with his father and brother, Amos.  During the Korean War he was called to active duty with the U.S. Army. He served as Master Sergeant and was headquartered at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.  After the Army, he did post graduate work at the University of Arkansas and served the Sallisaw Public School System as a Coach, Educator, High School and Elementary Principal.  Mr. Hawkins passed this life on March 26, 2011 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.

Wife: Nelda of the home

 

1 daughter: Janis Hawkins of Stillwater, Ok.

 

3 sons:  Joe Hawkins of Houston, Tx,
Marty Hawkins of Oklahoma City, Ok.,

And Steve Hawkins of Overland Park, Ks.

 

2 step sons:  Corey Hesser of Westminster, Co.
and Randy Hesser of Anchorage, Alaska

 

4 grandchildren and several great grandchildren

 

Several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends

 

He was preceded in death by
his first wife: Aileen Janis Hawkins in 1990,
his parents, a sister: Cleo Post
and a brother: Dr. Amos N. Hawkins
