James Perry “Cherry” Farmer, 88 of Sallisaw, Oklahoma passed away June 23, 2013 in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. He was born August 8, 1924 in Akins, Oklahoma to Art and Marie Wickett Farmer. He has been married to his wife, Roberta Nye Farmer for 62 years.
Cherry was proud to be a Sallisaw Black Diamond. He participated in football, band, and wrestled on the first SHS wrestling team under Coach Paul Post. He was a 1943 Sallisaw High School graduate. He was inducted into the Black Diamond Football Hall of Fame in 2008. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, a U.S. Army Veteran of Korean Conflict, and a member of the American Legion for 67 years.
For almost 50 years, he and his brother, Ray, were downtown merchants operating a DX service station and the Western Auto. He was a member of the Sallisaw Downtown Merchants Association, Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Sallisaw City Planning Commission. It was Cherry’s suggestion to then Mayor George Glenn, to relocate the Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library to the old Missouri Pacific Railroad Depot. He was actively involved in the Sallisaw Girl Scout program as chairman of the annual fund drives and treasurer.
He was a charter member of the Eastside Baptist Church. He was a member of the Mavericks Sunday School class and enjoyed singing in the choir.
Upon retirement Cherry and Roberta took up ballroom dancing were they where members of the Dervish/Century Ballroom Dance Clubs in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

4 great-grandchildren: Kennedy and Sydney Weedon of Sallisaw, Ok and Grant and Evan James Neurohr of Tulsa, OK
He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Lela Farmer; and 1 sister and brother-in-law, Vanita and Dr. Fred Carter.
