Obituary

Coach Ronnie Nathanial Asbill, 64, of Sallisaw, Oklahoma passed away February 2, 2013 in Sallisaw.  He was born March 31, 1948, the son of Grady Nathanial and Lillie Mae (Baldridge) Asbill.  He was married to Sandra Asbill.  Ronnie Asbill, a Sallisaw Black Diamond icon, graduated from Sallisaw High School in 1967.  While in High School, he was an all district football player for the 1965 and 1966 seasons.  He then went on to further his education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and while there he was a two year football letterman for the Redmen and received his Masters Degree in Science.  He then returned to Sallisaw in 1971 and began his teaching and coaching career that would span 40 years until his retirement in 2011.

Coach Asbill was an assistant football coach at Sallisaw High School for 32 years and in that time the Black Diamond football teams were a quite a force to be reckoned with, amassing 4 State Championship appearances, 2 State Championship Titles in 1980 and 1981, 14 District Championships and 3 semi-final appearances.

In his 8 year tenure as head coach from 1988 thru 1995, Coach Asbill had 1 team win a District Championship, 1 team made a semi-final appearance and he had 5 playoff teams.

He served as the Head Wrestling Coach for 8 years and was the Assistant Wrestling Coach for 23 years.  They were runner-up in State in 1989 and Dual State Champions in 1997. He coached 27 individual state champions and 35 all state athletes.

He was the coach for Varsity Boys and Girls Golf for 10 years and Varsity Track for 7 years.

Coach Asbill has won many awards over his 40 year coaching career; Oil Bowl Coach in 1982, District Coach of the Year in 1986, Oklahoma Coaches Association All State Coach in 1987, Southwest Times Record Oklahoma Coach of the Year in 1990 and Oklahoma Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the year in 2011.

Coach Ronnie Asbill’s coaching record and numerous awards attest to the fact that he truly was an awesome teacher and coach and very deserving of the title of Sallisaw Black Diamond Coach 1971-2011.  Coach Asbill will forever be remembered as a dedicated football player, coach and mentor to the Sallisaw Black Diamond Football, Wrestling, Golf and Track program and Sallisaw High School.
